Inspiration for 10 Lords A-Leaping

10 Lords A-Leaping has truly been one of the most FUN projects in my "Twelve Days of Christmas" painting project so far!

I contemplate many mediums for artistic inspiration.  I came across a Pinterest page featuring the Royal Ballet of London's performance of the "Tale of Mr. Jeremy Fisher." The  images from the production are absolutely enchanting...

Wikipedia - The story of a fisherman down on his luck reminded Beatrix of the 'fish stories' her father's friends had told in Scotland, as well as her brother's travails with rod and reel. She also recreated the gentlemen's club atmosphere absorbed from her father's reports of evenings spent at the Reform and the Athenaeum ... The text and illustrations for this story are some of the most balanced and compatible of all her writing. Nature is described and illustrated truthfully: beautifully tranquil as well as unpredictably aggressive ....Its carefully coloured botanical backgrounds of water plants, a frog with anatomically correct turned-out feet, a trout that any self-respecting fisherman would enjoy snagging, and a rather frighteningly rendered water-beetle who tweaks Jeremy's dainty toes, all made it a delight to look at as well as to read.[7]

The performance by the Royal Ballet is entirely the inspiration behind my interpretation of 10 Lords A-Leaping

Tale of Mr. Jeremy Fisher.  The ballet performers are captivating in their beautiful performances.  I am in awe that the dancers are able to pirouette, plie' and (most incredibly) grand jete' up into the air, all while costumed and "helmeted" opulently in-character (pay close attention to the frog's head!)

The main focus of "Eight Maids-a-Milking" is to evoke delight and to bring a smile to the viewer.  Who does not love a black and white mamma sow and her tiny, wiggly piglets?  I sincerely hope that you delight in this depiction of the age-old song verse of "Twelve Days of Christmas.

A starry, moonlit Partridge in a Pear Tree
A starry, moonlit Partridge in a Pear Tree

The foundation of Kimberly Potts' version of "Partridge in a Pear Tree" is a single espallier branch, since including the entire tree would reduce the scale of the heart of the painting:  the partridge.   This version of "A Partridge in a Pear Tree" expanded the vision and indulged the tendency toward fanciful and fantastical (i.e., note the meteor shower taking place amid the stars.)
