Oh boy... was "Eight Maids A-Milking" hard for me to conceptualize in a whimsical (and hopefully tasteful) way! I sketched out many drafts ranging from blushing milk maids in a milking barn to a mamma cat and kittens. Nothing seemed to come together cohesively and convincingly. The drafts were very uninteresting and pulled from the energy of the existing collection. Seriously, "Eight Maids a Milking" placed the "12 Days of Christmas" collection on major hiatus...
One morning while sitting at my parent's breakfast room, my eyes scanned their walls appreciatively. My parents are wonderful collectors of unique and uncommon bric-a-brac. My eyes rested upon an antique German wood carving of a mamma sow nursing her piglets. The carving is a perfect blend of whimsy and farmhouse antiquity. Oh, how I have yearned for that wall carving for years! My parents have laughingly reassured me that they have "willed it to me." And just like that... my dry spell had been broken. THIS will be the inspiration behind "Eight Maids-a-Milking!" I'm ecstatic by how the painting came together, once the revelation unfolded and lead the way. Talk about an awesome "ahah" moment!
My intention behind "Eight Maids A-Milking" is to evoke delight and to bring a smile to the viewer. Who does not love a black and white mamma sow and her tiny, wiggly piglets? I sincerely hope that you delight in this depiction of the eighth verse from the age-old song "Twelve Days of Christmas.
